Volunteer: Advocates for children in foster care (CASA Volunteers)

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers are everyday members of this community, who have been trained to provide court-appointed volunteer advocacy for local children who have been separated from their families by foster care.  Program staff train, support and coach volunteers through every step of the work! The program’s goals are to foster family preservation, ensure excellent care and treatment for the child during their time in foster care, and assist the court in making decisions that are well informed and in the child’s best interest.

CASA volunteers are appointed by the Murray/Whitfield Juvenile Court Judge to advocate for children’s best interests. They are appointed to children at the time that they enter foster care, and stay with each case until it is closed and the child is in a safe, permanent home.

CASA volunteers are a consistent, nurturing adult presence during a very uncertain, and sometimes scary and unstable time in a child’s life. Our best interest advocacy is driven by the guiding principle that children grow and develop best with their family of origin, if the family can be safely reunified.

We serve as a source of support and assistance to the child’s family members, as they work to recover from the challenges and traumas that made that child’s home an unsafe place. CASA volunteers serve as officers of the court, in the role of a trained guardian ad litem.

They interview anyone who might be able to shed light on the child’s needs, and then go to court and make recommendations to the judge, based on their independent assessments about what is in the best interests of the child.

CASAs also serve as a source of encouragement and support for the child, visiting them in the foster placement, making sure they’re safe, listening to their perspective, wishes, and dreams, and offering mentorship, guidance, and affirmation as the child finds their way through this time of transition and growth.

Volunteer: Reading and Socialization Show Love to Others as a Hospice Volunteer!

Volunteers serve as members of the hospice team by sharing their skills and interest with our patients and their families. This may involve just sitting and listening to a patient in his/her home or in an assisted living facility. It may involve singing or playing music for a patient, doing a craft, reading scripture, a story or book, or just being a friend to someone who cannot get out to see others. What you do as a volunteer is so very important to these patients and their families.

Volunteers will not be asked to do anything that they are uncomfortable doing. Our volunteer coordinator will work with you to accommodate your schedule. Volunteer: Door to Door: Recycle More!

The door hanger campaign is for individuals or groups of individuals to distribute door hangers that will help residents learn that they have access to free curbside recycling and help decrease contamination in the recycling bins.

If you would like to distribute the door hangers by yourself you will get a zone assigned to you approximately one mile long, sign a waiver, download the route, and then start distributing in your zone. You can complete the whole zone in one day or you can come back to it another day. You can schedule a pickup or drop off of the materials and thank you present with Amy Hartline at ahartline@dwswa.org.

If you would like to distribute the door hangers with a group, we will set up a time and day to come speak to your group briefly before you distribute to provide the door hangers, go over the waiver, rules, and answer any questions. The group can complete the whole zone in one day or you can come back to it another day.

Volunteer: Sunday Lunch Dog Volunteers

The Sunday Lunch shift runs from 12-2:30.

We need dependable volunteers to help take care of all the dogs we have at our facility. Volunteers spend their time letting dogs outside for play time and cleaning kennels. The best part about volunteering at the Humane Society is playing with the dogs and watching them play with other dogs and start to come out of their shells. We could also use volunteers to help take pictures and videos to post on our social networks.

If you are interested, please fill out a waiver at: https://hsnwga.org/volunteer. We look forward to having you and the dogs do too!

During your one on one visit with your F.R.I.E.N.D you will be doing activities that both you and the individual enjoy and can do together. Whether it be meeting for lunch or spending time in the art room with our artist, at Cross Plains. One day you could be painting in the art room and the next you could be out in the community shopping at the mall. There is a vast array of activities and ways to spend your time together that would be fun for both of you!

How are matches made?

What is the JA Discovery Center?

JA Discovery Centers are state-of-the-art learning facilities where middle school students apply concepts they learn in the classroom in an authentic and immersive experience. Inside the JA Discovery Center, middle school students will work alongside adult coaches in a capstone simulation called: JA BizTown (6th grade) and JA Finance Park (8th).

JA Discovery Center Volunteer Role

Volunteers are an essential piece of impacting middle school students. You will be a mentor and coach to small group of 6-8 middle school students through a 1-day simulation. You will share about your life experiences to make learning authentic for the students. In JA BizTown you will guide students as they make decisions around running their business, earning a paycheck, and generating a profit. In JA Finance Park, you will help students make the connection between their education and career, career and income, and ultimately their income and lifestyle, helping them through a monthly household budget.

Example Agenda:
8:00am-8:15am:  Volunteer Check-in (complimentary coffee bar!)
8:30 am: Volunteer Welcome, Tour & Training
10:00 am: Student Arrival
11:30 am: Lunch Break (Chick-Fil-A sandwiches provided!)
2:30pm-2:45pm: Volunteer wrap-up
