Who We Are
The DSC Simulation Center in the School of Health Professions prepares students for routine and intense situations they may face in clinical or field practice, and later, in the workplace. The simulation rooms contain equipment students may encounter in a hospital setting, including electronic health records, a crash cart, and IV pumps. The fifth room is set up to mimic a social work environment office or home environment. Each “Patient room “or “Home Environment” room is connected to a control room where interactions are recorded for discrete debriefing purposes only.
What We Do
The DSC Simulation Center allows health disciplines to work through a scenario, as they would in a real hospital setting while providing a safe learning, environment where mistakes can be made without dire consequences. Many times, real-world medical errors may occur during communication with colleagues, patients, or family members. Students in simulations are encouraged to communicate through talk-out-loud conversations, with each other and with the participants thereby encouraging communication with each other along with any participant in the room.
In simulations where students require practice with invasive medical procedures, high-fidelity patient simulators (HPS) are utilized. The HPS are computerized mannequins manipulated from the control room while allowing the operator to speak directly to the participants within the simulation as the patient.
Actors and actresses are used as Standardized participants (SP’s) to act in the capacity of patients or family members during simulated scenarios. The use of SP's allows healthcare students to communicate and interact with participants in the scenarios while practicing clinical skills gained through the individualized health professions program in the simulation. No experience is required to become a simulated participant and training is provided.
